What’s the Shelf Life of Liquor?

Every home bartender has a bottle or two that has been sitting in the back of their liquor cabinet for an extended period of time. So what is the shelf life of a bottle of alcohol?

Shelf Life of Hard Liquors 

The base liquors (brandy, gin, rum, tequila, vodka, and whiskey) are the most shelf-stable distilled spirits. These average 40 percent alcohol by volume (80 proof—though some are stronger) and typically do not contain added sugars, you can store these bottles for an extremely long time:

  • Unopened, these hard liquors have an indefinite shelf life.

  • Once opened, they will lose certain flavor qualities over a few years but will never really spoil.

  • The exceptions are flavored spirits, which may have sugar and additives that lower their shelf life. If you have a flavored vodka, rum, or tequila below 80 proof, it may contain sugar. Also, look for lower-proof flavored brandies and whiskies have "liqueur" on the label. Treat all of these like liqueurs.

Liqueurs and Cordials

The shelf life of a liqueur (e.g., schnapps, amaretto, and triple sec) is more temperamental. Because these spirits contain sugar and other ingredients that can spoil, generally, you'll want to discard open bottles after about 18 months.

Taylor Can’t Hide The Smiles

Dublin loves Taylor and Taylor loved Dublin! Taylor Swift’s 3-day ERAS TOUR performances were certainly memorable, with night 3 the most when we think she got an unexpected surprise. Taylor Swift's face lit up after she seemingly spotted her BF Travis Kelce in the crowd. Was he expected? Fans speculate he was not for Taylor’s singer's face visibly changes as her eyes light up and her mouth drops open.

Taylor did have some surprises planned for her VIP guests, with the superstar at one point debuting her Tortured Poets Department track "Clara Bow" in front of Stevie Nicks, who is referenced in the song. With the Fleetwood Mac frontwoman in the crowd, Swift also performed Midnights‘ "You're on Your Own, Kid," which Nicks has previously credited with helping her grieve late bandmate Christine McVie. 

"The reason I want to play this tonight is because a friend of mine is here," Swift told the crowd. "She's a hero of mine. I could tell her any secret; she'd never tell anybody. I’m talking about Stevie Nicks,” Swift announced, leading the audience in a massive round of applause." 

Having wrapped her tour’s Dublin leg, Taylor is now off to Amsterdam, with Night 1 of 3 kicking off Thursday, July 4.
