Tony Bennett To Honor Amy Winehouse at MTV Video Music Awards
Tony Bennett will lead a tribute to the late Amy Winehouse at the 2011 MTV Video Music Awards, the network has announced. Tony, who spent time recording with Amy in March this year, will take to the stage in memory of the soul singer Sunday at the MTV VMAs and introduce never-seen-before footage of their time together at London's famous Abbey Road Studios.
The announcement comes on the heels of the revealing of another Winehouse achievement -- one of whichmost artists can only dream. Following her tragic death, "Back to Black" has now become the best-selling album of the 21st century in Britain.
Britain's Official Chart Company announced the further success of her Grammy-award winning album, which includes the singles "Rehab" and "Love Is a Losing Game", and said it had overtaken James Blunt's 2005 debut album, "Back to Bedlam", to claim the crown.
"It was a thrill to record with Amy Winehouse," said Bennett. "And when you listen to the recording of Body and Soul, it is a testament to her artistic genius and her brilliance as one of the most honest musicians I have ever known."
"I was trying to tell her, 'You have so much talent. Slow down on the drugs or it's going to kill you,' " he said. "And then when I heard she died, I couldn't stop crying. She was such a talent, so sweet."
The recording session was Amy's last. The duo recorded Body and Soul for Bennett's upcoming album, "Duets II," which will be released on September 20.
