Jaycee Dugard Celebrates One Year Of Freedom With Family
Jaycee Dugard a kidnap victim-now survivor has been free from her captors – Phillip and Nancy Garrido – for one year as of today.
The 30 year old and her two daughters, fathered by abductor Philip Garrido, were joined by a female friend at a lakefront campground only 60 miles (97 kilometers) from the house in Antioch, Calif., where she was hidden in a ramshackle network of tents and temporary buildings from the age of 11.
Jaycee and her daughters Starlet, 16, and Angel, 11, are still receiving intensive psychological treatment to help them recover from the ordeal.
“She really appreciates the fresh air and open spaces, as you would expect from someone who was held captive for so long,” a source close to the family said. “And Jaycee and her kids have an incredible bond. She is a wonderful mother.”
Dugard reportedly made friends with other campers and indulged in her new hobby, photography, while relaxing. Despite having received a $20 million settlement from the state of California, she and her children lead a humble life.
They live with Dugard’s mother, Terry, 51, in a quiet rural corner of California not far from the campground in a rented four-bedroom house on a tree-lined street — and are fiercely guarded by the locals.
“They are part of a very small community. The neighbors know who they are and are very protective of them,” the source said. “They shop in discount stores all the time. They’re not used to spending money. When Jaycee goes out, she tries to buy clothes that are on sale. She’s not interested in anything flashy.”
Philip and Nancy Garrido, 55, are awaiting trial on kidnap and rape charges.
