Hula Hit And Run
Try this one on for size: begin with 40 hula dancers, dressed incognito. Bring them to various sites and attractions around San Francisco. Have them blend into the crowd, and when the music starts, they assemble into a dance formation and bust out doing the hula.
That's right, ambushed by hula dancers! Hula done guerrilla-style! After they've dazzled you, off they go, headed to yet another group of unsuspecting folks somewhere in the City.
This was the brainchild of Patrick Makuakane, kuma hula of the hula halau Na Lei Hulu I Ka Wekiu, a San Francisco-based hula dance company renowned for unique, creative and contemporary interpretations of this ancient Hawaiian art form. Some traditional purveyors of hula occasionally scoff as such innovations, yet Makuakane's hula has earned him recognition and a lifetime achievement honor from the San Francisco Ethnic Dance Festival.
Spreading their Hawaiian magic, the team hit multiple locations all over San Francisco Saturday, including the Ferry Building, Pier 39, Union Square, the Powell Street BART Station, the Apple Store, and and here at The Castro.
So next time you're at an Apple Store, don't be surprised to find a new hula app for your iPhone - demonstrated live!
