Angelina Jolie Makes First Public Appearance Post-Surgery With Inspiring Speech At Kids’ Choice Awards
Looking radiant as ever, actress Angelina Jolie stepped out Saturday or the first time since revealing she went under the knife to remove her ovaries and fallopian tubes.
A beaming Jolie was joined by her daughters Shiloh, 8, and Zahara, 10, at the 2015 Nickelodeon Kids’ Choice Awards in Inglewood, California, and was honored with the award for favorite villain for her role in “Maleficent.”
The crowd of tweens erupted in squeals and screams after Jolie was named the winner as Mrs. Brad Pitt hugged her two daughters before making her way to the stage.
“Don’t fit in. Don’t sit still. Don’t ever try to be less than what you are,” Jolie said in her uplifting acceptance speech.
“And whenever someone tells you that you are different, smile and hold your head up high and be proud.”
The event capped a headline-grabbing week for Jolie. The Oscar-winning star announced Tuesday that she underwent the elective surgery in order to stave off ovarian cancer.
Jolie revealed she learned she was at risk for the deadly cancer two weeks ago from a simple test she has annually that measures the protein CA-125 in her blood.
“It is not possible to remove all risk, and the fact is I remain prone to cancer,” she wrote in an op-ed in The New York Times.
“I will look for natural ways to strengthen my immune system. I feel feminine, and grounded in the choices I am making for myself and my family. I know my children will never have to say, ‘Mom died of ovarian cancer.’”
Jolie wrote that her husband was in France when her doctor broke the news. Pitt immediately jumped on a plane to be at her side.
Jolie’s brave announcement was cheered by doctors who lauded the actress for helping to spread the word about the benefits of preventative surgery.
The operation came two years after Jolie underwent a double mastectomy because she carried a genetic mutation in the BRACA1 gene. Her mother, aunt and grandmother died of cancer.
We love this woman.
